
Avec has over 25 years of experience strengthening the financial health of organizations through strategic planning and collaborative leadership. Most recently, she served as Chief Financial Officer at United Way for Southeastern Michigan, where she oversaw the organization’s financial integrity and operational leadership, including accounting, contracts, business management, and financial planning.
Previously, Avec was CFO at Walker-Miller Energy Services and US & Mexico Controller for Mastronardi Produce. She also served as Chief Financial Officer of the Detroit Science Center. Earlier in her career, she was an Audit Manager at Deloitte & Touche LLP, Office Manager at Heidrick & Struggles, and Senior Accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Mexico City. In parallel with her corporate roles, she taught in the MBA program at Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) as an Associate Professor.
Avec earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting from ITAM, where she later taught accounting. She went on to earn her MBA with distinction from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business.
She currently serves as a board director for the Archdiocese of Detroit Catholic Cemeteries, Financial Executives International, and MiSide, where she also chairs the Audit and Finance Committee. Her past board service includes roles as board director and finance committee chair for Ascension Michigan Ministry Market, as well as national board director and founding president of the Michigan chapter of the Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA). She is a graduate of Leadership Detroit (Class XXXIII).
For her work advancing opportunities for Hispanic professionals in the global workforce, Avec received ALPFA’s Woman of the Year award in 2011. She was named one of Michigan’s Most Valuable Professionals by Corp! Magazine in 2019, and in 2024, she was honored with the Distinguished Service Award from Financial Executives International.
Avec’s commitment to nonprofit service and passion for helping others are inspired by her mother and deeply rooted in her faith and her own upbringing. She believes that transformative impact comes from fostering the right connections among people and teams, and she leads with that principle in all she does.
Avec is the proud mother of two sons, James and Michael, who are the center of her universe. In her free time, she enjoys teaching swimming to students of all ages, volunteering, practicing yoga, and singing in her church choir.
