‘It makes us better teachers because we’re not carrying it inside’: How a Detroit preschool helps teachers cope with the stress of the job

PUBLISHED JUNE 26, 2019 BY ERIN EINHORN - CHALKBEAT It was a Friday morning in early May, just before Mother’s Day, when a group of preschool teachers settled onto oversized pillows and colorful beanbags for a conversation that would lead to tears, frustration and — eventually —  a sense of clarity on a delicate matter involving a child.  Karen Massingille, a preschool behavioral health therapist, sat on a tiny child’s chair, looking at the nine women seated around her in a cozy, carpeted corner of the sunlit room. She took a few deliberate breaths, then started to speak. “It’s Mother’s Day,” she said. “Anybody have any plans?” Her question seemed like a lighthearted inquiry and, indeed, it led at first to answers about planned barbecues and family gatherings. Starfish Family Blog: 2019 National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day

Starfish Family Services, the go-to resource for infant and children’s mental health in Michigan May observes the 70th annual National Mental Health Awareness Month, while May 9 is National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day. In recognition of Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day, and to shine a spotlight on empowerment, our entire staff of nearly 450 sported custom-made, lime-green T-shirts and ribbons. Our message? #StrongChildren #StrongFamilies #StrongStarfish. Mental health awareness is vital as depression, anxiety, and behavioral disorders in children continues to increase. According to the Centers for Disease Control, one in six children ages 2 – 8 has a mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder. These conditions contribute to the growing number of adolescents and young adults who are attempting or dying by suicide.
